DESTINATION Dunbarton, NH

The establishment and settlement of Dunbarton began in 1749 when the Masonian Properties granted a new township to a group headed by Archibald Stark of Amoskeag.  The township was originally named Starkstown in Stark’s honor.  The township was incorporated on August 12, 1765.  At that time, its name was changed to Dunbarton, which was taken from Dumbarton, a town near Glasgow in Scotland from which the Stark family originated.  (Acknowledgement: Harlan A. Stark Farm - Archibald Stark Jr. House:

Welcome to Stark Farm.  In 1752 this lot was granted in two 50 acre parcels to Archibald Stark Jr.  It is assumed that his brother General John Stark deeded him this parcel for “love and affection” for 300 pounds old tenor.  Archibald Jr. was born in Londonderry in 1730.  He was a Lieut. in Robert Rogers Corps of Rangers during the French and Indian War and served in the latter part of the Revolutionary War.  He settled in Starkstown (now Dunbarton) about 1753 and married Mary Anderson.  Archibald Jr. and Mary built this house in 1770.  He had nine children born between the years 1770 and 1780.  One of their children was son Robert, whose cellar hole is still located on the east side of this property.
